As the prevalence of mental health conditions and behavioral health (MBH) challenges grows within our country, pediatric physical therapists are uniquely positioned to serve as frontline providers for children and families who often present with psychological needs and are at risk for mental health conditions as they age due to their disability. Participants will discuss mental health distress through screening, low-intensity psychological interventions, and advocacy for policy changes that support integrated care. By discussing these recommendations in relation to our pediatric populations—from individual clinic visits to community-level advocacy—therapists will discover how to better support the physical and mental health of the children and families they serve.
Learning Objectives
Discuss mental health concerns for our clients, families, and communities.
Share strategies we use to address mental health concerns in our work.
Discuss opportunities for professional advocacy at the individual, community, and population levels.
